Dog-run turf is where artificial turf earns its money on the Front Range. Side yards and shaded runs where a dog paces a dirt track never grow real grass, and our bentonite-heavy Adams County clay turns that track to mud in spring and dust by August. We build dog runs on the same 4 inch compacted Class 6 base over geotextile fabric as a lawn install, but the two details that make a dog run last are drainage and infill. The base is graded to fully permeable so urine and hose rinse-water drain straight through instead of pooling, and we fill with antimicrobial Envirofill rather than plain silica sand because it neutralizes ammonia odor at the source instead of holding it in the pile. A weed barrier under the base keeps growth from pushing up through the seams where a dog scratches. The turf itself is a durable dual-tone polyethylene blade that takes claw traffic without matting flat like a cheap play-grade product does. A backyard putting green is a different build from a lawn, and the difference is all in the base and the contour. We install nylon putting-green turf with a shorter, denser pile that rolls true, set over a compacted, screeded base graded to the break and speed you want rather than dead flat. Cups are set into drainage-cored holes so the green sheds water instead of holding puddles through a Colorado thaw. Fringe collars in a taller landscape blade frame the green, and we shape the contours and slopes during base prep because that is the only stage where you can build in a real roll. Silica infill dialed to the pile height sets the stimp so it plays like a practice green and not a doormat. Because the greens go over the same permeable base we use for lawns, they drain through our freeze-thaw cycles and stay playable far more of the year than natural turf ever could here. The right ground cover depends on how you weigh up-front cost against what you spend every month after. Fresh-cut sod is the cheapest to install and gives you a soft, cool, real lawn the same day, but on the Front Range it carries the highest ongoing cost: 8,000 to 15,000 gallons of summer water per 500 square feet, plus mowing, fertilizer, and aeration season after season. If a living lawn is what you want, our sod installation over amended, graded clay is the honest way to get one that lasts. Artificial turf flips that math. It costs the most up front because the base prep and material carry the price, but after that the water bill on that area drops to near zero and the only maintenance is an infill top-off every 3 to 5 years and an annual power-broom, not weekly mowing. Xeric landscaping, native and adapted plantings over rock and mulch beds, lands in the middle: more up front than sod, far less water than either a real or artificial lawn once established, and it reads as intentional Colorado landscape rather than a green rectangle.

Is artificial turf good for dogs?+
Yes — with antimicrobial infill and a draining base, urine flushes through and odors stay down. We install dog runs all the time.
Does turf get hot in summer?+
It runs warmer than grass on a hot day. Lighter colors and reflective infills help; we don't recommend turf for play areas in full afternoon sun without shade.
How long does turf last?+
Premium turf with proper base prep lasts 15+ years. The infill needs a top-off every 3–5 years and a full power-broom about once a year.
Will it kill my water bill?+
Replacing 500 sq ft of bluegrass with turf typically cuts 8,000–15,000 gallons of summer water use per season.
Can you build a backyard putting green?+
