Tile Installation
Bath surrounds, kitchen backsplashes, and tile floors — set over the right underlayment with clean grout lines and proper waterproofing where it matters.
Schluter Ditra over plywood for floors, Schluter Kerdi or RedGard on every wet wall. Hardiebacker only when the project specifically calls for it — never as a shortcut.

Substrate first — Schluter Ditra and Kerdi
Schluter Ditra goes over plywood subfloor as an uncoupling membrane — prevents the subfloor flex from cracking the tile or grout. Kerdi or RedGard is full-coverage waterproofing on shower walls. We waterproof the curb, the niche, and the floor before a single tile goes up.

Layout, cuts, and grout lines
Tile layout starts at the focal point (shower head wall, kitchen sink window) and works out — not just from one corner. Cuts land on the perimeters where they read least. Grout joints sized to the tile (1/16" for rectified, 1/8" for hand-trim, larger for stone).

Niches, curbs, and the details that fail first
Built-in shower niches framed and waterproofed before the surround tile goes up — never cut into a finished wall. Curb top sloped to drain back into the shower. Linear or center drain trenched to the wall, not floating in the middle.

How a tile project actually runs
Owner walk & written scope
The owner walks the property, measures, and asks what isn't working. You get a written scope with material specs by name — no allowance line items.
Design & selections
Layouts, material samples, and finish options reviewed in your space. Included in the project, not billed separately.
Permits & site prep
We pull the permit when one is required, protect existing surfaces, and prep the site. Surprises documented in writing before any change order.
Build with one crew
Same crew start to finish. Daily clean-up, dust control where needed, and a foreman you can text directly.
Walk-through & punch list
Written punch list signed by you. We don't take final payment until you sign off the walkthrough.

Tile size, pattern, and substrate prep drive cost more than tile material itself.
- $Tile size
Large-format porcelain (24x48 and up) needs leveling clips and slow setting — costs more in labor than 12x24.
- $Pattern complexity
Straight-stack is fastest. Herringbone, basketweave, and diagonal patterns add 20–30% in labor.
- $Waterproofing scope
Full Schluter Kerdi shower waterproofing is more material and labor than a tub surround over Hardiebacker — but lasts 5x longer.
- $Substrate condition
Cracked subfloor, lath-and-plaster walls, or out-of-square rooms add prep time.
Schluter Kerdi installations carry a transferable system warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you waterproof shower walls?+
Always. A tiled shower without proper waterproofing is a leak waiting to happen — we use Schluter Kerdi or RedGard on every wet wall.
Large-format vs. subway tile?+
Large-format reads modern and minimizes grout lines. Subway is timeless and cheaper. Both are durable — pick the look you want.
How long does a shower retile take?+
Tear-out and substrate is 1–2 days. Waterproofing cures overnight. Tile is 2–3 days. Grout and silicone is half a day. Total: 5–7 working days.
Do I need to seal grout?+
Modern stain-resistant grouts (Mapei Ultracolor Plus) don't require sealing. Cement grout still does — annually.
